Time Zone

This is our local watch and clock shop.  My Grandpa owned a jewelry store, and when I was a little girl I used to love to go to the store and see the watch repairman fix watches.  He sat behind glass in a little booth, on a stool and would look through a jeweler's loop.  This store reminds me a bit of my Grandpa's store (which is now owned by my cousin - if you are in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, stop by Gerster Jewelers!)

Carpet of Purple Flowers

This is a wonderfully colorful time in Southern California - we are covered in brightly colored iceplant!   White, yellow, pink, orange purple... it is everywhere.  And in the fall, it turns out to be a pretty effective fire break.

San Diego Gone Native

If you were to have come to San Diego before it was inhabited by anyone other than Native Americans, this is the kind of vegetation you would have seen.  Except for most of the year, it would have been brown.  Or perhaps orange and red during fire season.

Lake Murray Ducks?

Nope - these are American Coots.   Coots are often mistaken for ducks, but they are actually members of the rail family and don't even have webbed feet.

One thing that distinguishes coots from ducks at first glance is their chicken-like, hard beak instead of a bill. This helps them grab plants and other food and tear it into pieces. Coots are mostly vegetarian, but are also known to eat some snails, insects, tadpoles, or crustaceans.

Bright Green After the Rain

You may not know that San Diego is naturally quite brown.  We irrigate and have lovely lawns and gardens, but if we were to let everything "go natural" so to speak, our native shrubbery is quite brown.

Except this time of the year.  We get a little bit of rain, and voila!  Green!

It's the Bomb.... Squad

The bomb squad showed up at the fire station across from our church... during church.  Many police cars blocked the roads leading to the fire station.  Many police and fire trucks were on standby.  Many fire fighters, police and bomb squad people (?) were there too.

Turns out that someone had purchased a device from an estate sale and brought it to the fire station out of caution.

Firefighters took the device to a vacant lot nearby and called on the department's Bomb Squad to investigate.

Upon further investigation, they realized the device was a World War II training bazooka rocket. They also determined it was harmless, since there were no explosives inside because it was a training round.

Umbrella Theme Day

It isn't as if we don't know what umbrellas are here in San Diego.  We just generally only need to use them for sun.  Sunbrellas?

Check what other umbrellas look like all over the CDP world
